Kwambai runs 59:01 Half (20.3km) in Marseille; Maria Abel wins with 2:26:58 in Frankfurt

29 October 2002James Kwambai, a 26-year-old Kenyan, won Sunday's Marseille-Cassis Half Marathon (20.3km course) in 59:01, to edge out Tanzania's Zebedayo Bayo.

The largely unheralded Kwambai who has a 10km best of 28:17, smashed the race record on a 20.308km course by more than a minute.

Bayo, who was third in the 1998 New York Marathon (2:08:51) clocked 1:00.12 for second, with compatriot Martin Sulle third in 1:01.09. Sulle finished 5th in the Commonwealth Games 10,000m in July.

Banwella Mrashani of Tanzania, the national Marathon record holder (2:29:51) won the Women's Half Marathon in 1:08.38, beating Kenya's Magdaline Chemjor (1:08.50) and Jelena Prokopchuka of Lithuania (1:09.12).

Frankfurt, Germany - Spain's Maria Abel captured the women's Marathon in 2:26:58. Germany's Luminita Zaitucu finished second with 2:29:57, after Abel passed her around the 26km (17th mile) point in the race.
