13 September 2001 - Tunis - Antonio Jimenez pulled away in the final two laps to lead a Spanish 1-2 in the men's 3000m steeplechase at the Mediterranean Games on Wednesday.

Elarbi Khattabi, the only Moroccan in the race after his more famous compatriot and world record holder Brahim Boulami failed to show, led from the start until Jimenez made his strong move. The Spaniard won in 8:31.31, ahead of teammate Jose Luis Blanco, who took the silver in 8:34.94. Laid Bessou of Algeria settled for bronze in 8:35.32. Khattabi dropped back to fifth.

Asmae Leghzaoui gave Morocco the first of two golds by powering home in the women's 10,000 past Olivera Jevtic of Yugoslavia, who had led for 7,000 meters. Leghzaoui beat the meet record, clocking a time of 31:16.94. Jevtic finished more than 16 seconds behind to take silver and Elvan Abeylesesse of Turkey won the bronze.

Leghzaoui's Moroccan countrywoman, Seltana Ait Hammou, triumphed in the 800 with a slow time of 2:04.28.

Marie Louise Bevis led a second French 1-2 finish in the 400. She took gold in 52.90, edging Francine Landre by six hundredths of a second. Tunisia's Awatef Ben Hassine finished third.
