The IAAF is saddened to hear the news that Ljubica ‘Gabre’ Gabric has died at the age of 101 on Wednesday (16).
The Italian discus thrower is believed to have been the last surviving athlete to have competed at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.
She finished 10th in discus the German capital and returned to the Olympic arena 12 years later when she finished 17th at the 1948 Olympic Games in London; she also competed in the 1938 and 1946 European Championships.
Gabric was the wife of the famous Italian coach Sandro Calvesi, and the mother-in-law of the 1968 Olympic Games 110m hurdles bronze medallist Eddy Ottoz, who was coached by her husband.
She was involved in athletics all her life and as recently as 2010 competed at the European Masters Championships, at the age of 95, setting several world bests for her age category in a variety of disciplines.
The IAAF wishes to pass on its deepest condolences to her family and many friends.
