German pole vaulter Tim Lobinger vaulted 5.80m, while Viktoria Styopina (Ukraine) took the women’s High Jump with 1.97m last night in Cottbus, Germany.

On Saturday in Dessau it had been Björn Otto who had beaten Tim Lobinger when winning the men’s Pole Vault with a height of 5.70m. He jumped that again in Cottbus but it was only good for third place this time. Ukraine’s Ruslan Yeremenko, who finished second, had cleared 5.70m on his first attempt and was therefore leading the event. Lobinger followed on his second attempt while Otto managed it on his last. Lobinger was then the only one who jumped 5.80m. That was five centimetres higher than the world leading of Dmitriy Kuptsov (Russia).

“It is a long time ago that I had such a good start into the season”, Lobinger said. Already in Dessau, where he had jumped 5.60 m, he had felt that he was able to jump higher. Lobinger had come back from a training camp in South Africa just about a week ago. He is now heading for a tough week with four competitions. “I will jump in Karlsruhe, Vienna, Stockholm and then Stuttgart”, said Lobinger, adding, “and I want to qualify for the World Indoors in Moscow.”

Lobinger has now also achieved the national qualifying standard for the World Indoor Championships in Moscow (5.70 m). Otto had already done so in Dessau and now in Cottbus once more. “I am happy with my form at this early stage of the season”, Otto confirmed. “But if I want to be among the Moscow team I have to place first or second at the national championships.” There will be plenty of contenders for these two tickets. One of them, Danny Ecker, has delayed his season’s start due to a number of minor injury problems.

In the women’s High Jump Dessau’s winner from last Saturday was beaten. Jusrt as then Tatyana Efimenko (Kyrgystan) jumped again 1.94m but in Cottbus Viktoria Styopina took over, jumping 1.97m, which would have been a world season lead had Blanca Vlasic of Croatia not leapt 2 metres on the same night in Moscow. Styopina, the bronze medallist of the Olympic Games in Athens was then going for 2.01m, but failed on all her attempts. Efimenko placed second in Cottbus, while Barbara Lalakowa (Czech Republic) also achieved that height for third place.
