Brazilian Maurren Higa Maggi, the 2008 Olympic champion in the Long Jump and South American record holder, produced the best performance of the São Paulo stop of the "Brazilian Athletics Tour" (16 May) by winning her event with a season’s best of 6.85m (wind 0.5 m/s).

This was the second outing of the campaign for the veteran from São Carlos (born 25 June 1976) after her 6.62m victory in Belém (6 May). Competing in much cooler conditions (15°C) than at the initial meet of the "Brazilian Athletics Tour" in Pará, Maggi was solid from the beginning. Opening with 6.70m (1.7), she followed with leaps of 6.73m (0.1) and 6.85 before passing on her fourth. Maggi is now second in the 2012 world lists behind the Daegu World champion, American Brittney Reese, who jumped 7.12m in Walnut, California, on 21 April.

"It was a great evening for me. I had a great warm up and I felt very well throughout the competition," said Maggi. "Nothing bothered me. Could have been cold, rainy or sunny; it wouldn’t have mattered. I just wanted to jump far."

Brazilian Keila Costa was second with a season’s best of 6.68m (1.4) from round two, while 19-year-old Jéssica dos Reis (the South American junior record holder with 6.55m from this season) was third with 6.43m (-0.7).

Silva upsets Murer

Cuban Yarisley Silva, the 2011 Pan-American Games Champion, recorded a significant victory over the 2011 World champion, Brazil’s Fabiana Murer. Silva, fifth in Daegu 2011 and seventh at the 2012 World Indoor Championships in Doha, vaulted 4.65m to obtain a comfortable win over Murer who topped out at 4.50m.

Silva had an excellent evening setting a season’s best in her third competition of the outdoor campaign. The 24 year-old Cuban vaulted 4.40m, 4.50 and 4.65 in her first attempts. Later she had three fouls at 4.76m (a potential national record). In her season’s debut, Murer came into action at 4.50m, but only cleared that height in her third vault. Under pressure from Silva, Murer had three fouls at 4.65m.

After Murer’s victory in Daegu, this is the second time in a row that Silva defeats the Brazilian. Silva’s previous triumph came at the Pan-Am Games in Guadalajara, where the Cuban set a national record of 4.75m.

"It didn’t matter to me if I beat Fabiana. I came to São Paulo to win, without analyzing who was competing. I’m happy with my performance, but I want to be vaulting over 4.80m in London," said Silva.

Murer was very disappointed. "I can’t explain what happened. Perhaps I was a bit anxious to display a good result in from of my crowd. 4.50m is a poor performance for me. I intend to vault over 4.80m, but I was tight, not running my approach in a relaxed way."

Good performances were also set in the Hammer Throw competitions. Tajikistan’s Dilshod Nazarov won the men’s event with 76.61m, narrowly beating Czech’s Lukáš Melich (76.60m). American Jessica Cosby won the female contest with 72.05m over Colombian Eli Johana Moreno (69.29m SB).
