Malta opts for mix of experience and youth

The Malta Amateur Athletic Association has opted for a mixture of experienced and promising athletes to take part in this weekend’s World Half Marathon Championships.

In the men’s category, veteran John Buhagiar seems to have re-discovered his form after a slow start to the season and has been running assertively in recent events.  Charles Cilia is Malta’s most promising distance runner and has been consistently clocking good times, which is partially down to the specialised training that he received in Italy earlier this year.

The inclusion of Giselle Camilleri, a bronze medal winner in this year’s edition of the Games for the Small States of Europe (GSSE), in the Maltese squad is a fitting reward to an athlete who came close to quitting two years ago.  A series of injuries almost cut short her career, but Camilleri’s determination saw her through and she is now getting back to form.

Carol Galea, who won gold at the 10,000m at the same edition of the GSSE and who has been Malta’s foremost female runner for over a decade, will be the other representative.
