Martínez and the Spanish Federation to receive National Sports Awards

Athletics will be very well represented in the 2007 National Sports Awards, prizes which are given annually by the Spanish High Sports Council.

Mayte Martínez will receive the “Reina Sofia” Prize as the best Spanish Sportswoman of last year. In 2007 Martínez achieved the bronze medal in the 800 metres at the 11th IAAF World Championships in Athletics celebrated in Osaka, Japan and finished second in this same event at three Golden League meetings in addition to the World Athletics Final.

Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA) will also be honoured this year as it has been awarded with the “Stadium” Cup for the promotion of sport with its programme “Jugando al atletismo” (“Playing athletics”).

The National Sports Awards were awarded on 30 April by a Jury formed by 28 members and chaired by Mr. Manuel Fonseca, who was the former General Director for Sports of the Spanish High Sports Council.

The honours will be delivered to the winners by the Spanish Royal Family on 23 June 2008.
