Haley McGregor successfully defended her title at today’s Telstra Zatopek Classic 10,000m races at the Box Hill track, Melbourne, Australia, while fellow Victorian David Ruschena took the men’s title in his first 10,000m race on the track.

25 year old McGregor ran with Anna Thompson for the majority of the race, breaking away with five laps to go to win in 32:41.10 from Thompson’s 32:48.07.

McGregor, set a 10,000m personal best of 31:43.14 when winning this race last year, and was 25th in the Olympic 10,000m in Athens.

In the men’s race Ruschena was the first to make the break with just over one lap remaining winning in 28.59.55. Mark Tucker crossed second in 29:01.79, while Scott Westcott finished third (29:05.78).

Melbourne Olympic Park which is the usual venue for the Zatopek Classic is closed for renovations, and will re-open after the installation of a new athletics track is completed in January 2005.
