| The falls of Portugal's Silva and the Britain's Mayock were the main events of the semifinals. These heats led to the qualification of all the favourites but without any great performances. Ngeny (KEN) was the fastest runner with 3:36.13. FIRST HEAT Hicham el Guerrouj (MOR) with 3:37.34 won a slow first semifinal. From the beginning the European Champion Reyes Estevez set the pace. The first 800m was reached in 2:03.25, showing just how slow the heat was. At 900m El Guerrouj made the first attack and he was followed only by the Spaniards Cacho and Estevez. The Moroccan again changed the rhythm with some 300m left and led until the end. SECOND HEAT The second semifinal was headed by the Spaniard Andres Diaz from the start of the race, with Noah Ngeny (KEN). The time at 800m was 1:58.95. 100 meters later Silva (POR)stumbled and Mayock (GBR) was also brought down at the same time. Finally Ngeny won the race and Diaz was second. This heat was the fastest, since the four first athletes clocked inside 3:36. The two athletes who qualified by times came from it, including the Olympic Champion, 3 times World Champion and former world record holder, Noureddine Morceli (ALG). La caida del portugues Silva y el britanico Mayock marco
unas semifinales que contemplaron la clasificacion de todos los favoritos sin grandes
marcas. Ngeny (KEN) fue el mas rapido de todos los participantes con 3:36.13. Hicham El
Guerrouj (MAR) con una marca de 3:37.34 vencio en una lenta primera semifinal. Desde el
inicio fue el campeon de Europa, Reyes Estevez, quien marco el ritmo de la carrera. El
paso por el 800 fue de 2:03.25, indicando la lentitud de la carrera. A falta de 600 m., El
Guerrouj dio el primer ataque, solo seguido por los espanoles Cacho y Estevez. El marroqui
volvio a cambiar el ritmo a falta de 300 metros para marcar la distancia definitiva. La
segunda semifinal tuvo al espanol Andres Diaz como protagonista desde los primeros metros,
al estar siempre en cabeza junto a Noah Ngeny (KEN). El tiempo al paso por el 800 fue
1:58.95. En los 900 metros se produce la caida del portugues Silva, cuarto en el ranking y
el britanico Mayock, por un tropiezo del primero. Tras el triunfo de Ngeny, el segundo
puesto fue para el espanol Andres Diaz. Esta semifinal fue mas rapida, los cuatro primeros
atletas bajaron de 3.36 y de ella se repescaron los dos mejores tiempos, entre ellos al
argelino Noureddine Morceli (triple campeon del mundo, campeon olimpico y plusmarquista
mundial) para la final del proximo martes. Entre los eliminados destaca otro argelino,
Saidi-Sief Ali, que ocupa el sexto puesto en el ranking.  |
