| Michael Johnson (USA), three times World champion and current Olympic champion, used the minimal effort tactic on his way to his fourth consecutive title by winning in the second heat with 45.10 ahead of the Pole Tomasz Czubak (45.27) and Ibrahim Wade (45.53) from Senegal. Former World indoor champion Nigerian Sunday Bada failed to make it to the next round. Brazilian Claro Sanderlei Parrela was the most notable athlete getting the best time overall (44.72) in the fourth heat, just 0.02s under his own season best. He was followed by Jamaican Greg Haughton (45.13) and North American Jerome Davis (45.14). Current Indoor World champion British Jamie Baulch was the winner of the first heat in front of Antonio Pettigrew (USA) with 45.22 and the Pole Piotr Risiukiewicz (45.54). Three athletes ran under 45 seconds: North American Jerome Young 44.94, Alejandro Cardenas 44.97 and the British Mark Richardson 44.98 in a close third heat. The first four of each heat were qualified for the semifinals. |

El tres veces campeon del mundo, actual campeon olimpico de
la prueba y lider mundial de la temporada, el estadounidense Michael Johnson utilizo la
tactica del minimo esfuerzo para proseguir su camino hacia su cuarto titulo mundial, al
vencer en la segunda serie con 45.10, por delante del polaco Tomasz Czubak (45.27)y del
senegales Ibrahima Wade (45.53), quedando eliminado el que fuera campeon del mundo en
pista cubierta en 1997, el nigeriano Sunday Bada. Pero fue el brasileno Claro Sanderlei
Parrela el que mejor impresion dio de todos, al lograr el mejor tiempo del global de las
series con 44.72 (serie 4), quedandose a tan solo dos centesimas de su mejor marca de la
temporada (44.70), por delante del jamaicano Greg Haughton (45.13) y del estadounidense
Jerome Davis (45.14). En la serie 1 el vencedor fue el actual campeon del mundo en pista
cubierta, el britanico Jamie Baulch, por delante del estadounidense Antonio Pettigrew
(45.22) y el polaco Piotr Risiukiewicz (45.54). En la serie 3 hubo un igualado final con
tres atletas por debajo de 45 segundos: el estadounidense Jerome Young 44.94, Alejandro
Cardenas 44.97 y el britanico Mark Richardson 44.98. Se clasificaban para las semifinales
