The quartet consisting of Van Ooudtshoorn, Mokganyetri, Botha and Malherbe, clocked 3:00.77 ahead of Poland, a team who already broke the three minutes barrier. Bahamas won the first heat in 3:01.17 in a close fight against France. Great Britain, second in Athens '97, a team that always competes for the medals in major championships, did not qualify for the final since they finished third (3:02.21). The second heat was dominated by the United States, the defending champion. The American team, without the new world record holder Michael Johnson, clocked 3:00.80. El equipo de Sudafrica ha marcado el mejor tiempo de estas
series clasificatorias. El cuarteto compuesto por Van Ooudtshoorn, Mokganyetri, Botha y
Malherbe registro 3:00.77 por delante de Polonia, un equipo que ya ha corrido por debajo
de tres minutos. En la primera serie se impuso el cuarteto de Bahamas (3:01.17) en dura
pugna con Francia. El equipo de Gran Bretana, segundo en Atenas, y que suele estar
luchando por las medallas en todos los grandes campeonatos, se quedo fuera de la final al
clasificarse tercero (3:02.21). La segunda serie fue dominada por el vigente campeon,
Estados Unidos. El cuarteto americano, sin el plusmarquista mundial de la distancia,
Michael Johnson, registro 3:00.80. En la final, Johnson sera un refuerzo decisivo para que
los americanos puedan luchar por un nuevo titulo en esta prueba. El resto de los equipos
