Season leader Terrance Trammell led all qualifiers with 7.56 in winning the last of the morning's three heats. The US champion also pulled Austria's Elmar Lichtenegger to the session's second-best time of 7.61.
The other heats were won by African record holder Shaun Bownes of South Africa (7.62) and current European indoor champion Stanislavs Olijars of Latvia (7.63).
The most significant of the non-qualifiers was Balazs Kovacs of Hungary, whose 7.86 was far off his season best of 7.56.
The top sixteen qualifiers will run in the semifinals at the conclusion of this morning's session.
