With the top six ranked athletes in the world this year coming from Russia and Hungary it was always inevitable the two nations would dominate, and so it proved in qualifying.

The most impressive qualifier for tomorrow’s final was Russia’s number one ranked Mikhail Levin, who hurled the hammer 76.12m. Hungary’s 14-year-old Sandor Palhegyi also showed his ability to feature in the medals with a third round effort of 73.16m.

In pool A, Hungary’s 15-year-old Kristof Nemeth threw 71.66m with Russian Yevgeniy Aydamirov the only other automatic qualifier with 69.67m - a long way behind his best of 78.06m in Kasnodar in May.
