Men’s 200m final

21 October 2000 - Paul Gorries of South Africa clocked 20.64 to win the men’s 200m world junior championships final here in Santiago.
Helped by a tail wind of 1.3m/s Gorries, who was running in lane 3, had a good start and entered the home straight in the lead. He was trailed by Poland’s 200m junior champion Marcin Jedrusinski, in lane six, world youth champion Timothy Benjamin (GBR) running in the outside lane and Japan’s Yusuke Omae.
With 80m to go, Gorries who was a reserve for the South African 4x100m relay team at the world championships in Seville improved his lead to five metres and was never to be caught.
Jedrusinski clocked 20.87 to secure the silver medal while Benjamin took bronze with 20.94.
A world youth silver medallist last year, Jamaica’s Omar Brown couldn’t recover from a mediocre start and had to settle for a disappointing fourth place.
Gorries celebrated winning gold together with his team mate Hannes Hopley who won the men’s discus world junior title just a few seconds after Gorries had crossed the finish line.
