Men's 400m Hurdles Final
Three European athletes took the medals of this final. Fabrizio Mori won the first gold medal for Italy of the Championships. His perfomance was 47.72, a 1999 world best and a new Italian record. Behind him three men finished inside just one hundredth of a second. The European record holder and 1997 World Champion, France's  Stephane Diagana, who headed the race until the last hurdle, was second with 48.12. Switzerland's Marcel Schelbert took the bronze medal with 49.13, setting a new national record, and Brazilian Eronilde Nunes de Araujo was fourth, also with 49.13. The reigning European champion, Pole Pawel Januszewski, had to conform with the fifth position (48.19).

Los atletas europeos coparon el podium. Frabizio Mori dio el primer oro a Italia en los campeonatos. Vencio con 47.72, estableciendo la mejor marca mundial de la temporada y record de Italia. Por detras entraron tres hombres en un margen de tan solo una centesima. El Plusmarquista europeo Stephane Diagana (48.12) que encabezo la prueba hasta la ultima valla, desciende un puesto con respecto al pasado mundial donde fue oro. Tercero se clasifico el suizo Marcel Schelbert con 49.13 (nuevo record nacional), el mismo tiempo que el brasileno Eronilde Nunes de Araujo. Pawel Januszewski, vigente campeon europeo, debio conformarse con la quinta posicion (48.19).
