22 October 2000 – Jamaica’s outstanding World Junior Championships were capped off with a gold run in the final event of the week, the men’s 4x400 metres relay.

Jamaica’s eighth medal – and third gold – was secured as Brandon Simpson sprinted home, his tongue poked from his mouth in delight.

The frantic last lap had begun with five teams in contention for the medals, drawn from Europe, Africa, central and South America. But it was Simpson, the individual 400m silver medallist, who had the class to outrun Germany and South Africa, who were pipped for the bronze by 400m hurdles gold medallist Marek Plawgo’s late charge for Poland.

Sekou Clarke, Aldwyn Sappleton, Pete Coley and Simpson finished in 3min 06.06sec, with Germany taking silver in 3:06.79, and Poland third with 3:07.05.
