Hungary’s continental champion Robert Fazekas won the competition for Europe in a World Cup record of 71.25m, a throw which destroyed the nearest opposition by over four metres.
It was the Hungarian’s competition from round one with a 65.41 release holding the lead before his second round throw floated in the blustery wind conditions out beyond the 71 metre line for a World Cup record. Both the athlete and the conditions were at their optimum best as was shown with Fazekas’ follow up in round three which landed just shy of 70 metres (69.77m).
Second place was taken by South Africa’s Frantz Kruger (66.78) and back in third, a further two metres down came Spain’s Mario Pestano (64.64m).
A round of applause must go for the team spirit shown by Japan’s Koji Murofushi. The World championship silver medallist at the hammer, competing here for Asia generously entered the competition to secure a point for his team, and threw 41.93m for ninth.
