World Junior record holder Yevgeniy Aydamirov of Russia didn’t manage to improve on his 82.60 metres standard set in Tula last July but still set a new Championships record of 78.42 metres to win the men’s Hammer Throw final tonight.

Aydamirov actually won the title by a margin of only three centimetres as Hungary’s Kristof Nemeth, both men’s best throw of the evening coming in the second round of the competition.

Throwing second, and with an opening round foul, Aydamirov needed a big throw to be sure of making the cut for the top eight and indeed he managed to send the 6kg implement to a would-be winning distance of 78.42.

Throwing second to last, Nemeth who saw his early lead snatched responded with his 78.39m. While Aydamirov fouled all but one of his remaining efforts, Nemeth was having a good series but lacked the one big throw that would have made the difference.

The top two positions remained unchanged and gold went to the Russian.

There was a competition in the competition for bronze which went in favour of Slovakia’s Marcel Lomnicky’s whose fifth round national junior record of 77.06 was just enough to defeat Yury Shayunou of Belarus who also set a national junior record at 76.95m in round five.

Qu Daqai in sixth and Walter Henning in eighth also set new national junior records for China and the USA respectively.
