There were two automatic qualifiers from Group A; Kamilius Bethlke (GER) with 70.99 and Mohsen El Anany (EGY) with 70.35. Both athletes qualified with their opening throws.

In Group B, Australia’s Simon Wardhaugh made his intentions clear, launching his implement well clear of the yellow line marking the qualifying distance with his first throw. Unfortuantely Wardhaugh made a circle infringement invalidating this effort. After fouling his second throw too, Wardhaugh finally made a mark with his third attempt, sending his hammer out to 67.31, despite clipping the cage.

The Asian Junior champion Yihai Zhao fouled his first two attempts, but made up for this with his third throw of 66.87, however, this was not quite far enough to place him among the group of next best qualifiers.

World leader Andrey Azarenkov  made no mistakes as he hurled his hammer out to 70.76 metres with his first throw to become the first automatic qualifier in this group. Ukraine’s Olexiy Sokiskiy narrowly missed joining him a couple of minutes later, his hammer dropping down barely in front of the line for 69.20 metres.

Michal Fiala of Czech Republic tossed his hammer neatly over the line at 69.65 metres to become the second automatic qualifier and he was rapidly joined by Olexiy Sokirskiy making his second attempt, who produced the longest throw so far of the group with 72.22 metres.

With his final throw, Germany’s Andreas Sahner joined the  automatic qualifiers as he improved dramatically on his second throw of 60.47 with a big 70.71 effort. He had fouled his first attempt.

Peresonal bests of 69.22 for Hungary’s Sandor Palhegyi and 68.65 for Belarus athlete Sergiy Lytvynov  enabled the two to advance to the final among the twelve best performers.

The United States Champion in the discipline. Nick Owens, failed to qualify after three fouls in the first qualifying group. His final throw was close to the automatic qualifying distance, but the implement fell 2 metres outside the sector. His performance was matched by the silver medallist from the Asian Junior Championships, Ming-Chien Lin from Chinese Taipei, who also failed to record a legal throw.

Automatic Qualifying 69.50 or at least 12 best qualified
