World season’s leader Aleksey Fedorov became the first Russian in 20 years to win the men’s World Junior Triple Jump title here in Moncton his second round 16.68m securing the win over Ernesto Revé of Cuba (16.47) and Omar Craddock of the USA (16.23).

Fedorov set the tone for the start as he hopped stepped and jumped to 16.52 into a 3.2m head wind in the first round to bounce in the lead, a position he would never relinquish.

In fact the only scare of the competition came as early as the second round with Revé landing at 16.47, only 5 centimetres off the Russian champion.

Fedorov responded immediately with his eventual winner the contest for gold being virtually over. Only Fedorov himself approached that mark with a fifth round effort 16.59 and last round 16.44, as four of his five legal jump would have in fact won him the title.

Meanwhile Craddock and Alexandru Baciu were alternating in third position, the Romanian responding to Craddock’s opening 16.15 with a third round 16.18. However the American went one centimetre better after the cut, a performance he further improved with his last round 16.23.

Andrea Chiari of Italy concluded in fifth at 16.13 as no other athlete today broke the 16 metres.
