Mockenhaupt wins 5km in Vienna

DM Oesterreichischer Frauenlauf - was held on Sunday 12th June in Vienna, Austria.

A record field of 10,105 women started the race in the city’s famous Prater. The temperature was a warm 20 Degrees Celcius, and for the first time there was a small elite contingent running up-front for this distance of 5km.

The leading group from the start was composed of European 10,000m Challenge winner Sabrina Mockenhaupt of Germany, Hungary’s Aniko Kalovics and Ireland’s Sonia o’Sullivan.

But after 3.7km Mockenhaupt broke away and ran alone in the lead. She eventually crossed the finish in a new course record of 15:42.9.

Kathrin Switzer was honoured with the Oesterreichischen Frauenaward 2005 for her help in stimulating female running. She also ran the 5k in 26.04.

There were over 10,000 female runners - 7500 ran the 5k, 2500 a 10k, 600 did Nordic Walking, and there were over 20,000 spectators.
