Godfrey Mokoena’s 8.33m leap was the key highlight at the annual Papaflessia meeting in Kalamata, Greece, on Saturday (30). More than 150 athletes from 30 countries participated.

Mokoena threatens own national record

Mokoena, the reigning World indoor champion and Olympic silver medallist, dominated the event with his season’s best leap, the third farthest in the world this season and just six centimetres shy of his won South African national record set in 2006.  Algeria’s Issam Nima was a distant second, reaching 8.00m, a season’s best.

Russia’s Anna Pyatykh won the Triple Jump with 14.37m, to dominate for the second in a week. The Russian also won at the Filothei Women’s Gala last week with 14.30m.

Greece’s rising star of the event, Paraskevi Papachristou, was second with a career outdoor best of 14.20m. With her jump Papachristou equaled the A qualifying standard for the Berlin World Championships and also for the European U-23 Championships in Kaunas, Lithuania, which is her main objective this year.

Briton Dwain Chambers cruised to a double sprint victory, winning the 100m in 10.06 and the 200m in 20.58. His 100m performance is the fastest among Europeans this season.  Over the half lap, Swede Johan Wissman was second just ahead of Norwegian Jaysuma Saidy Ndure. Both were credited with 20.67.

Elsewhere

Experienced Jamaican Michael Blackwood won the men’s 400m in 46.17, while Greece’s Petros Kyriakidis, running in the second heat clocked 46.73 to collect the standard for the European U-23 Championships.

Russian Andrey Olshanskiy dominated the 3000m Steeplechase in 8.57.32 and his compatriot Ilya Korotkov was the only javelin thrower who managed to exceed the 80m line (80.80m). Ukraine’s Oleksandr Nartov cleared 2.24m in the High Jump, while in the women’s event Kazakstan’s Marina Aitova cleared 1.94m.

Ukraine’s Irina Shtanhyeyeva won the 100m (11.51) and Poland’s Urszula Piwnicka won the Javelin Throw (63.53m).
