American sprinter Lashauntea Moore produced the best performance of the “Grande Prêmio Caixa Maringá de Atletismo” by running a stunning PB of 10.97 in the 100m on Sunday (30) at the “Estádio Willie Davis” in the Brazilian city of Maringá, state of Paraná.

“This is a wonderful result for me,” Moore said. “It’s even hard to believe it. I’m very happy.” The 26-year-old native of Akron, Ohio, became the first female athlete ever to run under 11 seconds on South American soil, and the third in the world to dip under the barrier in 2010.

Competing in conditions that weren’t very warm (21°C/72% humidity), but aided by a nice breeze of 1.2m/s, Moore, who was seventh in the 200m at the 2007 World Championships and the World youth 200m champion in 1999, was able to improve her 11.03 PB, set at the 2008 US Olympic Trials/National Championships in Eugene.

Takeshia Harrigan of the British Virgin Islands was second with a SB of 11.16, with Jamaican Simone Facey a distant third in 11.41, also a season’s best..

Moore has pieced together a strong spring season thus far. On 1 May in Baie Mahault, she equalled her 200m PB with 22.46, the second fastest in the world this year.

Olympic champion Walker defeated twice

Jamaican Melaine Walker, the reigning Olympic and World 400m Hurdles champion, suffered two defeats in Brazil on the same week. On 26 May, in Uberlândia, Trinidad and Tobago’s Josanne Lucas, the 2009 World bronze medallist, won the race in 55.25, followed by Jamaican Nickiesha Wilson with 55.68. Walker was only third with 55.90.

And in Maringá, Walker was surprised by Nigerian Joke Odumosu, who won the event in 55.66. Walker was second in 55.96, and Lucas fifth in 57.00.

Chambers in form, despite headwind

Also in Uberlândia, Great Britain’s Dwain Chambers, the 2010 World indoor champion at 60m produced a promising time of 10.19 at 100m, considering the strong 3.2 wind he ran against. In his second race of the outdoor season, after his 10.11 runner-up finish in the Rio World Challenge meeting, Chambers beat Bahamian Derrick Atkins (10.27) clearly.

In other top results from Uberlândia, Brazilian Kléberson Davide won the 800m in 1:45.48, and later repeated in Maringá in 1:46.26; and Cuban Alexis Copello took the Triple jump with 16.76 (-2.2). Moore also recorded a victory in Uberlândia, but in 11.48 (-2.1), and fellow American Rachel Yurkovich took the Javelin with a PB of 57.22m.

Other best marks from Maringá were recorded by Brazilian sprinter Nílson André, who won the 200m in 20.45 (1.8), ahead of American Xavier Carter (20.67); by another American, Joel Brown, who won the 110m Hurdles in 13.68 (1.2); by Jamaican Dorian Scott, who took the Shot in 20.07m; and by the 18-year-old Ethiopian Bertukan Feyisa, who won the women’s 1500m in a PB of 4:09.91.

The meets of Uberlândia and Maringá marked the end of the so-called “Brazilian Athletics Tour”, a series of five events that also included the cities of Fortaleza, Belém, and the Rio GP, which was part of the IAAF World Challenge.
