The XXV edition of the “Troféu Brasil de Atletismo”, the tournament that serves as the Brazilian national championships saw some good performances, as it ended on Sunday (24) in São Paulo at the track of the “Parque Ibirapuera”.

Close to her Area record

The competition started on Saturday (21) with great weather and concluded on Sunday (24) on a rainy day. In the infield, Fabiana Murer ratified her position as the number 3 vaulter in the current IAAF World Ranking, and jumped a “Troféu” record of 4.57m and later had 3 failures at 4.67m, a height that would have represented an improvement of 1cm to her own South American record.

Murer comes off a great European tour, where she has emerged as one of the best female athletes of the area, as well as one of the best vaulters in the world. Her best performances were those at the Monaco GP (1st), Memorial van Damme, Brussels (2nd), and Athens World Cup (2nd).

The 25 year-old has taken the area record from 4.43 to 4.66m in 2006. Murer set that mark in Monaco and later equalled it in Brussels, where she was the best athlete after the great Yelena Isinbayeva, a feat she repeated at the World Cup.

Maggi back with a title

After more of 2 years of absence due to a doping suspension and the birth of her daughter Sophia, Maurren Maggi repeated her top performance of the year (6.84m, 1.0m/s wind) to capture her fifth national title in the Long Jump. Maggi had already jumped that distance at the 2600m of altitude of Bogotá on 15 July, and this performance ratifies her good form.

At 30 years of age, Maggi hopes that she can still be a force in the international scene. Maggi has a personal best and South American record of 7.26m (Bogotá, 26 June 1999) and took the bronze medal at the 2003 World Indoor Championships.

According to the Brazilian Confederation, the top male performance belonged to long jumper Rogério Bispo, who leapt to 8.05m (wind 1.1) to capture his event.

The 20-year-old Bispo was followed by Peruvian Louis Tristán, who with an 8.02m performance (wind 1.8) set a new national record. Bispo has jumped 8.21m this season. This two athletes (and Maurren Maggi) are coached by Nélio Moura, the man who also trains Panamanian Irving Saladino, the number one long jumper in the IAAF World Ranking.

Parrela's run brings back epic memories

After Bispo’s performance, it was also remarkable the 400m 45.49 mark produced by the 31-year-old Sanderlei Parrela.
Parrela, who was able to win his fifth title at the distance, also recorded his best performance of the past 5 seasons. The runner, coached by Luiz Alberto de Oliveira, is a former silver medallist at the 1999 World Championships in Seville, who has had several injury problems, and now has finally been able to show some of that class.

Parrela set his 44.29 South American record at an epic race for the distance in Sevilla, where he finished second behind the great American Michael Johnson. In that race in Andalusia the Texan set the current World Record of 43.18.

After a promising 8:30 debut at 3000m Steeplechase in the Linz GP, Hudson de Souza went back to his roots and took a double victory at 1500 and 5000m in 3:43.53 and 13:42.56 respectively, while Fabiano Peçanha surprised the “Golden League 800 rabbit” Osmar dos Santos, to beat him 1:46.34 to 1:46.87. Osmar will turn 38 years of age next 20 October.

Defeat for Gregório

Another upset was witnessed in the Men’s Triple Jump, where Jefferson Dias Sabino beat the World Indoor Champion, World Athletics Final and World Cup runner-up Jadel Gregório 16.71m to 16.49m. Gregório made no excuses, but was competing with an injury on his right hamstring and after a long European season. Now he will take some time off and travel back to Newcastle in December to continue his training in the hands of Peter Stanley, the man who coached the great Englishman Jonathan Edwards to his 18.29m World Record.

One national record

Only one Brazilian national record was improved over the weekend. 29-year-old Katiuscia Borges de Jesus threw the Hammer at 62.64m on her last attempt; only minutes before Josiane Soares had obtained the previous record of 62.20m. Prior to this event, the top mark was 62.12m and also belonged to Soares since 2004.

Besides Murer’s and de Jesus’s championship records, 2 other Championship top marks were bettered. Those were the ones of the men’s Hammer (67.67m by Wágner Domingos) and the women’s Javelin (58.21m by Alessandra Resende).

Rosemar Coelho Neto, Lucimar Teodoro, Juliana Azevedo and Elisângela Adriano obtained double-victories at the Troféu. Coelho Neto won the 100 and 200m in 11.59 and 23.27. Teodoro, the 400 and 400mh in 52.32 and 56.58. Azevedo, the 800 and 1500m in 2:01.63 and 4:16.25 (a personal best) and Adriano the Shot and Discus with 17.03 and 58.09m respectively.

For the 34 year-old Adriano, these titles represented her 15th at Shot and 13th at Discus.

On the opposite side of the spectrum was 19 year-old Luiz Alberto de Araújo, who won his first title at the Decathlon. De Araújo, 6th at the recent World Junior Championships in Beijing, scored a personal best (with the senior implements) of 7386 points.

The mark represents the second all-time performance in the South American Junior lists after the 7422 points’ area record of Pedro Ferreira da Silva that was set in 1985.

At the team competition, the victory was easily obtained by Clube de Atletismo BM&F.

After the “Troféu”, most of the Brazilian athletes will compete at the 44th edition of the South American Championships that will happen between 29 September and 1 October in Tunja, Colombia. Results from which will appear on the IAAF website.
