The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced the composition of the Evaluation Commission which will visit the four Candidate Cities bidding to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The team will be headed by IAAF Council Member Nawal El Moutawakel, who chaired the Evaluation Commission for the 2012 Olympic Games bid process. Her team, composed of representatives from the Olympic Movement as well as a number of advisors, will analyse the candidature files of the four bidding cities - Chicago (USA), Tokyo (Japan), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Madrid (Spain) - due for submission to the IOC by 12 February 2009.
IOC President Jacques Rogge said: "I would like to thank Nawal El Moutawakel for accepting to lead it. Nawal did an excellent job as chairwoman of the Evaluation Commission of the 2012 Candidate Cities. As an Olympic champion, a newly elected member of the IOC Executive Board and Sports Minister in Morocco she will bring an invaluable contribution to the Commission."
Commenting on her appointment, Nawal El Moutawakel said: ‘I feel privileged to chair for the second time an Evaluation Commission and am grateful to the IOC President for his trust and support. The team will have the complex and exciting task to evaluate the potential of four highly capable Candidate Cities. Our role will be to assess their technical capabilities in a transparent and neutral way in order to provide IOC members with the information they need to guide their choice on 2 October 2009. I rely on the valuable experience of my colleagues and look forward to taking on this challenge.”
Olympic champion in the 400m hurdles at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, Nawal El Moutawakel was the first Moroccan athlete to win a gold medal. Her outstanding sporting career and her dedication to sport led her to become a member of the IAAF Council in 1995; Secretary of State, responsible for Youth and Sport, to the Minister of Social Affairs in Morocco in 1997 and Minister of Sports in 2007. She has been an IOC member since 1998 and was elected member of the IOC Executive Board this summer in Beijing.
1976 Olympic 110m Hurdles gold medallist Guy Drut of France was also appointed a member of the Evaluation Commission.

Nawal El Moutawakel dirigera la Commission d’évaluation 2016 du CIO
Le Comité International Olympique (CIO) a annoncé aujourd’hui la composition de la commission d’évaluation qui rendra visite aux quatre villes candidates à l’organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2016.
L’équipe sera dirigée par Nawal El Moutawakel, laquelle a présidé la commission d’évaluation lors du processus de candidature pour les Jeux Olympiques de 2012. Son équipe, composée de représentants du Mouvement olympique ainsi que d’un certain nombre de conseillers, analysera les dossiers de candidature que les quatre villes candidates - Chicago (USA), Tokyo (Japon), Rio de Janeiro (Brésil) et Madrid (Espagne) - devront remettre au CIO pour le 12 février 2009 au plus tard.
S’exprimant à ce sujet, le président du CIO Jacques Rogge a déclaré : "Je voudrais remercier Nawal El Moutawakel d’avoir accepté de la diriger. Nawal a fait un excellent travail à la tête de la commission d’évaluation pour les Jeux de 2012. En tant que championne olympique, membre nouvellement élu à la commission exécutive du CIO et ministre des Sports au Maroc, elle apportera assurément une contribution de valeur aux travaux de cette commission."
À propos de sa nomination, Nawal El Moutawakel a déclaré : ” Je ressens comme un privilège de présider une commission d’évaluation pour la seconde fois et remercie le président du CIO de sa confiance et de son soutien. L’équipe aura la tâche complexe mais passionnante d’évaluer le potentiel de quatre candidates de haut calibre. Notre rôle sera d’analyser leurs capacités techniques de manière neutre et transparente afin de fournir aux membres du CIO les informations dont ils ont besoin pour faire leur choix le 2 octobre 2009. Je compte sur la précieuse expérience de mes collègues et me réjouis de relever ce nouveau défi.”
Championne olympique du 400m haies aux Jeux de 1984 à Los Angeles, Nawal El Moutawakel ramena la toute première médaille d’or à son pays, le Maroc. Sa brillante carrière sportive et son dévouement au sport l’ont amenée à occuper diverses fonctions importantes : membre du Conseil de l’IAAF en 1995; secrétaire d’État à la Jeunesse et au Sport au Ministère marocain des Affaires sociales en 1997 et ministre des Sports en 2007. Elle est membre du CIO depuis 1998 et vient d’être élue à la commission exécutive du CIO cet été à Beijing.
