It was the not the best of days for 2003 and 2007 World marathon champion Catherine Ndereba of Kenya, her seventh place finish in yesterday’s Flora London Marathon (26) a disappointment by the illustrious standards of the double Olympic silver medallist.

However, with her finishing time of 2:26:22 in London, Ndereba found herself equalling the long-standing lifetime record for the most sub-2:30 marathons which is quite an achievement in itself and a powerful indication of the outstanding stature of her long career.

The 36-year-old first established her name on the road running circuit in the USA in the mid-1990s before going on to take her two World titles and a number of major city marathons wins including Boston and Chicago.

Ndereba’s run in London yesterday was the 21st sub-2:30 time of her marathon career which began in 1999. This puts her even with Germany's Kartin Dorre who achieved the same number between 1984 and 1999.

Ndereba is now one ahead of Kenyan countrywoman Joyce Chepchumba, the only other member of the career 20 sub-2:30 club.
