International competition “Russian Winter 99”, held in Moscow on February 14 has given one more chance for Russian athletes to reach the qualifying standards set by the All Russia Athletic Federation for participation in the World Indoor Championships. They must achieve results which enter in ten best in the world of the season, only then after indoor national championships will athletes get a place in the 28 strong team.

The women’s pole vault opened “Russian Winter” competition with the impressive jumps of the talented Tatyana Gubareva, the former 400 m runner from the Siberian city Omsk. Her winning mark was a new national record: 4.31m. She said: “I did not expect to overcome 4.30. My  result today gives me hope for a medal at the championships in Maebashi. It will become one more step to the summer world championships".

In men’s 60 m the winner was Nigerian Sunday Emmanuel in 6.72.

Russian triple jumper Yelena Lebedenko won her event with one of the leading marks this season: 14.69. “Later in Maebashi I am going to jump much better," said Yelena.   "On the eve of “Russian Winter” I got cold and managed to make only three jumps”. Yelena is a former European indoor champion in pentathlon. She wants to be best in the world in the coming summer season in triple jump.

In the 800m. the new leader of middle distance running Natalya Tsyganova produced 2:04.40.

Other highlights of “Russian Winter 99” included 3:40.57 in  the men's 1500 m. by Russian athlete Andrey Zadorozhnyi and 4:11.06 by Svetlana Kanatova in the women's race over that distance.

“We are satisfied with the outcome of “Russian Winter." said chief Russian coach Valeriy Kulichenko . “We could check the form of our team, which can win 3 gold medals at the world indoors. But there are still serious problems in some events. No Russian athlete will compete in Maebashi in the men’s 60m. 800 meters and 4x400. In the pole vault Maksim Tarasov is missing the winter championships and the same applies with our best middle distance runner Svetlana Masterkova. She is preparing to win two gold medals at the summer world championships. Now it is quite clear that some leaders are going to miss the indoor championship because of injuries. They are long jumper Kiril Sosuno, triple jumper Denis Kapustin and middle distance runner Yelena Afanasieva.
