NEWS FLASH – Galkina-Samitova improves her World Steeplechase record

Russia’s Gulnara GalkinaSamitova this evening improved her World record in the women’s 3000m Steeplechase when winning the inaugural Olympic title in this event in front of a capacity 91,000 audience on the third evening of athletics competition in the Bird’s Nest.

Galkina-Samitova who held the record at 9:01.59, became the first woman below 9mins, as she smashed the field apart - 1000m, 2:58.63 and 2000m, 6:01.20 – and set a time of 8:58.81*, which subject to usual ratification procedures is a new World record.
