The IAAF is saddened by the news that France’s Shot Put record holder Yves Niare died this morning in a car crash. He was 35.

His best, set in 2008, was 20.72m and he won the silver medal at the 2009 European Athletics Indoor Championships.

He wore the French vest on 34 occasions, including at the 2007 and 2009 IAAF World Championships and 2008 Olympic Games.

"It is a tragedy which affects me with unbelievable force," said the French federation (FFA) president Bernard Amsalem.

"Yves Niare was an endearing athlete with whom I had great friendship. On behalf of the FFA, my thoughts are with his wife, his very young daughter and his father, a skilled coach," added Amsalem.
