Niklaus and Unger out injured

German decathlete André Niklaus will not be able to compete at the European Championships in Gothenburg next month. Having won the World Indoor title in Moscow in sensational style the 24-year-old athlete from Berlin suffered a foot injury, which already prevented him from competing in Ratingen recently. He now had to cancel his participation at the European Championships as well for this reason.

There was another blow for German athletics shortly before Niklaus pulled out: Number one sprinter Tobias Unger, who orginally was thought to run for gold at 200m in Gothenburg, had to end his season due to a heel and Achilles tendon problem. Unger had placed seventh in the Olympics 200m final in 2004 and in the final of the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005.
