Oprea and Dita-Tomescu take Romanian Awards

Triple jumper Marian Oprea has been named as Romania's Athlete of the Year after becoming the first Romanian man to claim a medal at the World Championships in Athletics.

Oprea, who won bronze in Helsinki, was honoured by the Romanian Athletics Federation on Friday (16), while marathon runner Constantina Dita-Tomescu picked up the women's award after her successes at the World Half Marathon Championships in Edmonton in October.

Oprea won his award ahead of long jumper Bogdan Tarus and shot putter Danut Simion, while discus thrower Nicoleta Grasu came second behind Dita-Tomescu with 1,500 metre runner Elena Iagar third.
