Nadzeya Ostapchuk set a new season’s best in the women’s Shot Put releasing a 20.98m effort at the Memorial Mechislav Ovsyanik meeting which took place at the Staiki sports centre on Sunday (27).

In the men’s competition, 2003 World champion Andrey Mikhnevich sent the shot over 21.50m four times, with his second attempt landing at 22.00m exactly.

Ostapchuk improves 2008 best by 8 centimetres

Ostapchuk’s first attempt was registered at 20.80m. On the second attempt the 2005 World champion put 20.14, with 20.98m coming on her third try. It was an improvement of 8cm on her world season’s best from Grodno on 8 July.

"I am happy with the result,” said the winner not surprisingly.

“However, it would have been desirable to push for 21m, but because of the small line-up in the competition I didn’t find sufficient time between rounds to rest.”

The men’s tournament was a show too! Mikhnevich started with 21.52m. In the second he reached 22.00, and from that point on spectators expected a new national record which has been held since 1984 by Sergey Kasnauskas (22.09) but it was not to be. Mikhnevich put 21.99m in the fourth, while in the sixth he produced 21.98.

In the Hammer throws, Valeriy Sviatokha produced 81.37m, while the best woman was Darya Pchelnik with 74.24m.

Maksim Lynsha, set a personal best in the 110m Hurdles, winning in 13.46 sec, a time 0.15 better than his previous result!

In the Discus Throw, a personal best was set by Dzmitry Sivakou - 64.83m – while in the Javelin Throw there was a PB by Aliaksandr Ashomka who produced 84.27m on his last attempt.
