Australian World champion Jana Pittman scored an exciting double for Pannellinios AC on the opening day of the European Champion Clubs Competition in Lagos, Portugal, today.

Pittman, representing the Greek club at the Portugese venue, won both the 400m flat race and her specialty the 400m Hurdles at which she won World gold in 2003. She took the first race in 52.37, before doubling up to prevail in the Hurdles in 55.69.

Her maxiumum points tally saw Panellinos leading the Cup after the first day's action ahead of defending champions Sports Club Luch of Moscow, with Valencia's Terra i Mar lying in third place.

The European Indoor 60m and 200m champion's Kim Gevaert and Ivet Lalova clashed over 100m with the latter an easy winner by 0.08sec in a wind-assisted time of 11.04. Gevaert of Belgium was representing the Spanish club from Valencia while Bulgaria's Lalova ran in the colours of Panellinios.

Sports Club Luch Moscow also came up against strong opposition in its bid to retain the men's title.

The Italian team Fiamme Gialle Rome lead with a total of 57 points, followed by Sporting Club de Portugal with 56.5 and Panellinios AC with 51. But the Russians still remain in contention, lying only seven points behind the Italian leaders.

The highlights of the competition was a wind-assisted 100m victory for the host nation's Olympic silver medallist Francis Obikwelu of Sporting Club de Portugal in 10.19.

His team mate Rui Silva, the Olympic bronze medallist, won a tactical 1500m race in 4:01.55, while Czech Svatoslav Ton from Dukla Praha, dominated the High Jump with a 2.26m victory.
