All Russian athletes who have decided to compete in the 2007 Indoor season will meet in Volgograd from 9 to 11 February with the aim of qualifying for the European Indoor Championships to be held in Birmingham.

The only athletes who could be exempted from taking part in the National Championships may be Tatyana Lebedeva who suffered from a leg injury and Yelena Isinbayeva who is considered to be the leader of the team.

The competition in the men’s High Jump will be the centre of attention. Russian athletes are lead the World Indoor lists with four out of the five top best performances of the world season belonging to them. Ivan Ukhov set the new national Russian indoor record in Moscow at the Russian Winter tournament. But World indoor champion Yaroslav Rybakov, European champion Andrei Silnov and World indoor silver medallist Andrei Tereshin will do their best to prove that the youngster may be beaten.

The men’s 60m Hurdles will most likely turn into the first official triumph of 22-year -old Evgeniy Borisov. To everybody’s surprise he is the fastest among all his European opponents at 7.58.

Evgeniya Polyakova is the fastest in the world at 60m (7.18); at 23 years of age she may be considered as the Russian revelation of this season. Larisa Kruglova (7.19) and by Marina Kruglova (7.20) will make it a very interesting final.

Traditionally Russian women are extremely fast at 400m and this season for instance they hold places 2 to 6 in the European indoor ranking. Oksana Zbrozhek is the best among her compatriots at 800m and 1500 but has yet to decide what distance to run at.

The women’s High Jump will be as exciting as always with an unprecedented rivalry between Anna Chicherova, Victorya Klugina (Slivka), Olympic champion Yelena Slesarenko, Yekaterina Kuntzevitch and Tatyana Mnatzakanova who have all cleared 1.94m or higher.

And naturally World leader Tatyana Lebedeva will attract everybody’s attention. Her best result is 6.82m but she is closely followed by European champion Ludmila Kolchanova, Natalya Lebusova and Oksana Udmurtova.
