Pre Olympic Meet, Nudgee College, Brisbane
James Dunaway for IAAF

3 September 2000 – Brisbane, Australia-- Australians and Americans stood out in a  pre-Olympic meeting on the Nudgee College track here before an overflow crowd of more than 5,000.

Savante Stringfellow of the United States won a hotly contested long jump with a jump of 8.23, beating Australian Jai Taurima's 8.13,with Peter Burge
of Australia third in 8.10 and Estonian decathlete Erki Nool fourth in 7.90.

Stringfellow, who had exchanged words with Taurima via the local press after Taurima had made some remarks which some felt were racist, met Taurima for the first time while they were warming up for the event here.

"I spoke to him first," said Stringfellow. "I shook his hand and said, 'Good luck in the jump, and he said the same to me. "I left my shoes in my hotel room," Stringfellow added, "and the ones they brought me were my sprinting shoes instead of my jumping shoes. If I had my right shoes I'd have jumped even farther."

The men's 400 was a runaway for the USA's Harrison twins -- Alvin winning in 44.73, with Calvin second in 45.17 and Davian Clarke of Jamaica third in 45.90.

Melinda Gainsford-Taylor won the women's 200m impressively in 22.73 by 7 meters from her Australian Olympic teammate, Nova Perris Kneebone. Earlier Gainsford-Taylor won the 100 in a slightly wind-sided 11.16 seconds, edging Veronica Campbell of Jamaica, who ran 11.18.

In the women's 800, emerging Aussie star Susan Andrews finished strongly to beat New Zealand's Toni Hodgkinson, 2:00.32 to 2:00.62.
