IAAF President Lamine Diack who was in Sri Lanka at the start of this week for a three day visit, met the President of the country Mahinda Rajapaksa on Monday 20 October.

The Honourable 5th President Mahinda Rajapaksa welcomed President Diack at his official residence, ‘Temple Trees’, in the capital Colombo.

This is the first time that the head of the athletics' world governing body has ever toured Sri Lanka, and in honour of the occasion President Rajapaksa hosted a lunch for President Diack.

There was the usual ceremonial handshake and exchanging of gifts with Diack presenting Rajapaksa with an IAAF Plaque to mark the moment, and the Sri Lankan leader reciprocating with a present of his own.

President Rajapaksa has strong ties with the sport of athletics, significantly having headed the national federation, the Athletics Association of Sri Lanka (AASL), over a decade ago at the time when President Diack was still Senior Vice President of the IAAF, and at a moment when Sri Lanka took its first ever medal at the World Championships of Athletics. In Athens 1997, Susanthika Jayasinghe took the silver medal over 200m.

Rajapaksa thanked Diack for touring the country to inspire local athletes and asked his assistance in helping to promote athletics in Sri Lanka. One commitment President Diack immediately accepted was that he would return to Sri Lanka next year to witness the official opening of the new Diyagama International Athletic Stadium.

President Diack had earlier in the day flown to Diyagama to inspect the construction work going on with this Rs. 500-million project which will provide Sri Lanka with only its second international stadium containing a world class track.

"Your country is doing well," said Diack at a press conference after the stadium visit. "I am beside you and will be at your disposal to develop sport in your country."

"The (development) programmes should be educational and make athletes aware of the dangers in using drugs and discourage them."

"You need to reach out to the rural areas because there is a lot of potential in them."

"Schools are the best place to start training athletes and development programmes in the various age groups will help to spot the talented athletes."

Later in the day President Diack addressed a large group of athletes, officials and coaches at a reception in the National Olympic House in Torrington Square.

Throughout the visit to Sri Lanka, President Diack was accompanied by President of the AASL, Major General Palitha Fernando, and AASL General Secretary, Gen. P.D. Pinnewale, and the tour as a whole was reported on by front page headline stories in all the Sri Lankan media.
