Daegu, Korea - The IAAF Green Project was commemorated today at the IAAF World Championships, Daegu 2011 with the opening ceremony of the IAAF Green Project Exhibition which was carried out by IAAF President Lamine Diack, who was accompanied by IAAF Vice-President Dahlan Jumaan Al Hamad.

The ceremony took place in front of the Athletics Experience Zone in the Market Street area of Daegu stadium, with speeches given by President Diack, LOC Co-President Hae-Nyoung Cho, and Byong Hyon Kwon, President of the Future Forest, a non-governmental organisation that focuses on environment preservation.

The IAAF Green Project Exhibition is made up of 150 artworks from top cartoonists and invited participants, which are displayed in front of the Daegu Stadium Athletics Experience Zone. After the ceremony both President Diack and Vice-President Al Hamad took time to look over the exhibition and were presented with cartoon caricatures of themselves.

The IAAF Green Project for a healthier earth was first launched in ‘Osaka 2007’ and was continued by the organisers of the 12th edition of the World Championships in Berlin in 2009. The Local Organising Committee (LOC) of Daegu 2011 and the City of Daegu are equally committed to the conservation of the environment, thereby laying the foundations for a ‘green,’ eco-friendly 2011 IAAF World Championships.

Solar energy panels have been installed in the stadium, the Athletes’ Village, and the EXCO Congress venue, and the city has also introduced an environmentally-friendly public transportation.

Furthermore, the LOC has organised public awareness campaigns city and nationwide to help educate the public on the use of recycled goods.

A park at the stadium has also been designated to commemorate the IAAF Green Project, where World Championship medallists and other famous sports personalities will play their part by planting trees. On Tuesday 30 August (17h30) there will be a Tree Planting Ceremony which will involve President Diack and other members of the IAAF Council.
