It is with sadness that the IAAF has learnt of the passing of Rafael Puignau (ESP), a former long standing member of the IAAF Cross Country Committee (1970 to 1995), who died on Sunday 2 March in San Sebastian, Spain at the age of 87 years. He was the recipient of the IAAF Veteran Pin in 1986.

Puignau was a man who devoted his entire life to athletics as a judge and as a manager. He was a vice-president of the Spanish Federation (RFEA), and the first President of the Basque Federation.

Last year at the Spanish Championships Puignau received the Medal for Sports Merit of the RFEA. He was also rewarded by the Basque Government, the Delegation and the Town Hall, with a Medal for Civil Merit.
