The National Youth Athletic Championships found their momentum as the cream of the athletes, comprising boys and girls aged 18 years and under, produced some excellent performances in the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, in the second edition of the three-day meet which concluded here on Sunday evening (29 May).

The meet, which was sponsored by REVA group of educational institutions, saw three national records bettered and one equalled.

Rajesh Kaliramana is a person who realised his dream on Saturday (27 May) in a meet which was marked as a ‘selection trials’ for the Indian Team to the World Youth Championships to be held at Marrakech, Morocco in July this year.

Rajesh scaled a height of 2.05m twice before coming to Bangalore. First on 13 May at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium during the World Athletics Day competition, and again at the same venue four days later for a third place finish in the first leg of AFI National Athletics Circuit.

However, an inadequate number of entries on the first occassion and the appearance in a senior grade in the second meet, denied him a chance to better his previous best and national U-18 record which he had held since 2003.

Rajesh finally made it with a fantastic sail over 2.08m on his first try to set the new mark. However, his efforts to go further did not materialise as he fouled at the next height of 2.10m.

The high jumpers showed tremendous improvement. We only hope that Rajesh Kaliramana will carve his name in the annals of athletics history in the near future.

Jhuma eclipsed national marks

West Bengal’s Jhuma Khatun exhibited wonderful athleticism when she took the girls’ metric mile with a new national mark of 4:38.42 on the second day of competition. Her performance in the 1500m race was however just short of the World Youth qualifying mark of 4:35.00.

Jhuma didn’t give up as she returned to the track the next day to assault another national mark in the 800m, with a time of 2:11.30 and thus the grade for Marrakech.

Raji stars in sprints

Following her icon "P.T. Usha", Kerala’s Christudas Thanga Raji took four gold medals by winning the 100m, 200m flat and 100m Hurdles, before anchoring her state team to victory in the sprint relay.
