27 January 2002 – Dortmund, Germany - Russian pole vaulter Svetlana Feofanova set the first of what is sure to be a string of records in the rapidly developing women's pole vault, posting a new European indoor mark of 4.66 metres, a one-centimetre improvement on a record she set last February in Athens.

The 1992 Olympic 5000 metres champion Dieter Baumann finished second in the 3000m race  here on his return to competition after serving two years of a ban for doping.

The 36-year-old was beaten by the reigning Olympic champion over 5000m, Ethiopia's Million Wolde, clocking 7min 47.54sec to Wolde's 7:47.22.

Tim Montgomery of the United States began his quest to wrestle the short sprint world records from Maurice Greene by clocking a rapid 6.48sec in the 60m - although he only won in a photo finish from impressive South African newcomer Morne Nagel, who was given the same time. Greene's record stands at 6.39sec.

Ingo Schultz, the giant German who won a surprise silver medal over 400m in last year's outdoor world championships, took the 200m in 21.04sec.

Britain's evergreen Colin Jackson was beaten into second by Yevgeny Pechonkin in the 60m hurdles, 7.52sec to 7.57sec.
