Oeiras, Portugaltime Olympian Fernanda Ribeiro of Portugal, the 1995 World and 1996 Olympic 10,000m gold medallist was the queen of the 23rd Torres Vedras International Cross Country - EAA permit - race, which took place this morning.

Ribeiro, 35, showed she was in good shape from the start of the race and eventually finished the 5.2km race with a comfortable win.

At first, three athletes managed to keep up with her, two Kenyans Irene Kwambai and Catherine Kirui, and Fernanda’s compatriot Mónica Rosa, a local runner. However, at about 1500 metres from the finish line Ribeiro decided to leave them all behind with a dramatic surge. She arrived home in 18:17, followed by Irene Kwambai in 18:20, who was just infront of Catherine Kirui in 18:21, and Mónica Rosa in fourth, 18:44.

“I’m feeling much better than I was at the beginning of the season, naturally. But still not entirely as I wanted to be. I sense that I lack some rhythm but at the moment even being like I am still running great”, said Ribeiro. “The race went very well for me. I felt good.”

In the men’s race there were no surprises. The Kenyan athletes controlled everything with Kiprono Menjo winning in a sprint finish in 30:35, with Peter Kamais in second place in 30:36. Some seconds after came David Kilel to complete the Kenyan sweep. Philmon Kemei was fourth in 31:13 and Philip Kipkoech fifth in 31:18.

The story of the race was made by these first five athletes. They controlled the event throughout, although they were accompanied by two Portuguese runners Ricardo Ribas and Manuel Damião, until 6km. Ribas crossed the finish line in 31.35 (6th) and Manuel Damião (7th) in 31.39.
