German Discus thrower Lars Riedel is confident of making it a trio of Olympic medals when he travels to the Athens Games later this year.

Riedel claimed the gold in Atlanta in 1996 and silver in Sydney four years ago and will continue his build-up to this summer's showpiece at a meeting in Cuxhaven on June 26.

"I will give my fans in Cuxhaven an exciting competition in the year of the Olympics,'' he said. "I need this competition as I want to win my third Olympic medal in Athens.''

"I have good memories and am looking forward to Cuxhaven. Last year there was a fantastic discus result.''

The former five-time World champion held off the threat of compatriot Michael Mollenbeck that day to register a winning throw of 67.37 metres on the North German coast and will be looking to throw even further this year.
