An emphatic victory by Janus Robberts (shot put) and Khotso Mokoena's (long jump) national junior record were among the highlights of the final ABSA Series meeting at the Green Point Stadium (Friday 19 March).

Heaving the shot to a distance of 20.73m on his fifth attempt, Robberts confirmed that his preparations for the Olympic are well on track. Earlier he was credited with distances of 20.08, 20.46, 20.64, and 20.37.

"This could be the best year of my career. My strength training has gone well. What I need now is to get competition fit for the Athens Olympic," says Robberts.

Early in the year he had previously shown promise while representing the Southern Baptist University in the United States. However, Robberts tends to fizzle at major competitions in the latter half of the year. He says this will not happen this time.

"This year I only plan to peak once-at the Olympics. That will give me a good chance of making the finals at the Olympic," said Robberts.

Kruger and Viljoen post good results too

Also inside the Olympic A qualifier in their discipline where discus thrower Frantz Kruger (64.14) and womens javelin thrower Sunette Viljoen (61.10).

Other notable performances where in the javelin with Hardus Pienaar (80.64), and Gerbrandt  Grobler (78.13) had their best result this year, while Shaun Bownes won the 110m Hurdles in 13.67.  Chris Harmse (78.09) prevailed in the hammer throw. Hestrie Cloete (1.93) continued her dominance in the High Jump. While Olympic finalists Heide Seyerling-Quinn won the women's 400m in 51.62 seconds.

Josephs' Olympic Heptathlon aim

Although Janice Josephs won the 100m (11.42) and 200m (23.49) she has a far more ambitious plan. "I want to qualify for the Olympics in the Heptathlon," she declared.

She scored 5740 in Aries, France last year and reckons she can surpass the 6050 Athens qualifier.

"My coach and I estimate that I can score over 6100 points based on my current form," Josephs declared. Should she qualify for Athens she will also surpass the national record of 6019.

South African long jump junior record

A massive leap in his last attempt saw teenager Khotso Mokoena (7.95) improve his South African Long Jump junior record by 11 centimetres.

"Even though I think I have a better chance of internationals success in the triple jump, it is my dream to break the eight metre barrier in the Long Jump. I am delighted that I am not far from my target," said the versatile Mokoena. He holds the national junior record in both events.

From rural Transkei, the Bhitane twins Zolile and Zolani had every reason to be excited after they qualified for the World Junior championships with career bests. Though placed seventh Zolile clocked 8:52.51 in the 3000m steeplechase. While in the 5000, Zolani was credited with a 13:59.01 effort.

The 5000, was won by veteran Shadrack Hoff (13:32.20). Hendrik Ramaala (13:39.93) was runner up ahead of newcomer Lindikhaya Ntangayi (13:47.24) and Aaron Gabonewe (13:49.94).

"I will be running the Rotterdam Marathon and this show that I have regained my speed after the injury I sustained at the beginning of the year. I want to achieve a career best in Rotterdam," said Hoff.
