It was with great sadness that today the IAAF received news from the Ligue Royale Belge d'Athlétisme, its Member Federation for Belgium, that Roger Tytgat had passed away on 7 March 2009; he was 90-years-old.

Roger Tytgat was a former member of the Council of the Belgian Federation beginning his service in the late 1960s. Internationally Tytgat made his most significant contribution to the development of the sport as a member of the IAAF Cross Country Committee, having been elected during the 1981 IAAF Congress in Rome.

In a statement the Ligue Royale Belge d'Athlétisme paid tribute to Tytgat as “a genial and a clever man, a man of rare integrity!”

Tytgat was born in Oostende in 1919, a town where he lived all his life.

He will be sadly missed by the Belgium and the wider international athletics community.
