A men's 100m dash which drew three men to 10.20 second times or better was the centre piece of today’s Perth Telstra A-series at Perry Lakes Stadium, in Perth, Australia.

Joshua Ross, the 2004 national champion who turns 24 years of age on 9 February, won in a time of 10.12 (1.1m/s) a personal best, ahead of former 400m runner Daniel Batman in 10.19. Third was Cameroon’s Joseph Batangdon with 10.20.

Ross’s previous 100m best was his 10.22 clocking in his qualification round heat at last summer’s Olympics. He progressed to the quarter final stage in Athens. He has a 200m PB of 20.78 (20.76 windy). He had run two times already this Australian outdoor season in Mingara on 16 January (10.30 windy final, and 10.64 heat), both of them wins.

Burgess on high again

The highlight of the infield action was Olympic Pole Vault finalist Paul Burgess who cleared 5.80 metres to take an impressive win to reinforce his current credentials as the world’s inform vaulter. He set his personal best of 5.91m last weekend which remains the 2005 world season outdoor lead. In today’s competition Burgess made three attempts to increase this lead but failed each time at 5.95m.

Steve Hooker took second place (5.60m), while former World champion Dmitri Markov finished third bowing out after clearing 5.45m.
