The Caribbean’s oldest road running festival, Run Barbados 2004 takes place this weekend, with some of the region’s finest runners expected to participate.

Run Barbados began as a small event in 1983, but its popularity and importance have grown every year since, with the first-ever IAAF World Marathon champion, Australia’s Rob de Castella also won the first Run Barbados men’s 10K race. Kenya’s 2003 World champion Catherine Ndereba has graced Bajan shores, and Bostonian Kim Goff has recorded an amazing 10 wins in the women’s marathon.

Caribbean runners have also made their marks. Barbados’ own Adelbert Browne has had some memorable battles with regional neighbours Victor Ledgers of St. Lucia, Pamenos Ballantyne of St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Ronnie Holassie and Curtis Cox of Trinidad & Tobago. This year’s festival could feature St Lucian Olympian Zepherinus Joseph, who is completing his studies at University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
