Russia’s young athletes excel

Last weekend and into this week, two Russian Championships - U-23 (30 June / 1 July) and U-18 (28 / 29 June) - were held in Cheliabinsk, and Vladimir, Russia.

Under 23 Champs

The stadium named after the 2000 Olympic champion in the women's High Jump Yelena Yelesina hosted Russian Nationals for U-23.

Una Mehti-Zade won the women's 100m in 11.37 secs, while Aleksandra Fedoriv was the first at 200m, won in 22.69 that is one of the best results of the Olympic season and managed to get the glories on 100m Hurdles, 12.90.

Kseniya Zadorina was second to none in the women’s 400m (52.49), while the 800m was dominated by Yekaterina Kostetzkaya (2:00.99).

Yelena Sokolova leapt 6.74m in Long Jump leaving Anna Nazarova three centimetres down in second place ( 6.71). Irina Gordeeva cleared 1.92m in the High Jump and Anastasiya Krupskaya flew over a 4.20m bar in the Pole Vault.

Irina Tarasova won the Shot Put with a toss of 18.03m.

The results in men's programme were not so promising. Still the victories of Ivan Iliychev in High Jump (2.26m) and of Artem Buriya in Pole Vault (5.50m) are notable, as is Aleksandr Petrov’s 8.15m performance in the Long Jump. He was followed by Stanislav Ionov and Evgenoy Novitzkiy, both landed at 7.96m.

Sergei Yarmak was the first in the Triple Jump - 16.71m.


Under 18 Champs


The ancient Russian city of Vladimir staged the Russian Youth Championships (U-18).

1100 youngsters participated in the tournament, with more than 120 sprinters taking part in the men's and women's 200m heats!

Alisa Matyash was the first at 400m (56.32sec) but ran even better in the heat (55.82).

The winning time of Yekaterina Zavialova at 800m was 2:06.62, while  Albina Chinchikeeva celebrated a double victory: 4:30.86 at 1500m and 6:44.83 in the 2000m Steeplechase.

In men's division there were several good results in throwing events. Valeriy Lordan won the Javelin with 75.55m and Leonid Rumiantzev was the best in the Discus (53.53m).
