Six World Champions at Nebiolo Meeting in Turin

5 June 2000 – Turin – A top level cast of athletes has been announced for the International Nebiolo Meeting in Turin on June 10, named after the former President of the IAAF who passed away in November of last year. Six World Champions including local favourite Fabrizio Mori will be competing in the newly renovated Ruffini stadium, which, from Thursday will carry a new name, that of Nebiolo.

Besides the 400m hurdles gold medallist Mori, three-time long jump World Champion Ivan Pedroso, sprinter Inger Miller, double 400m World Champion Cathy Freeman, Cuba’s Daimi Pernia (400m hurdles) and Ukraine’s high jump World Champion Inga Babakova have confirmed participation. There is also a strong possibility that pole vault legend Sergey Bubka and Italy’s most durable sprinter Stefano Tilli will take part.

The list of attending elite athletes extends to Tyree Washington, a member of the world record holding 4x400m US relay team, Algeria’s rising star over 800m Djabir Said Guerni, and Cubans Anier Garcia in the hurdles and long jumper Luis Meliz.

Two days before the meeting, on Thursday, the official re-opening of the stadium will take place where IOC President, Juan Antonio Samaranch, will unveil a staue of Primo Nebiolo.
