Smith and Pearson take NACAC Combined Events titles

Jamaica's Maurice Smith and American Emily Pearson were the male and female winners at the NACAC Combined Events Championships which ended at Usain Bolt Track, UWI, Mona on Saturday (28).

On Saturday's 2nd day, Smith won the Discus Throw with 47.61m, finished 2nd in the 110mh (14.01) and Pole Vault (4.70m), to add to third place finishes in the Javelin Throw (56.50m) and 1500m (4:48.13), and finished with a two-day total of 8078 points.

Smith had earlier, on Friday’s first day (27), won the Shot Put with 16.68m, 2nd in the Long Jump (7.16m) and 100m (10.94), 3rd 400m (49.80) and 6th High Jump (1.91m).

Smith, who described the outing as "another rough decathlon" said the competition was very good. "I glad I won, but I don't think I'll be doing another decathlon until Daegu," Smith said.

Canadian Damian Warner, winner of the men's 100m (10.68), Long Jump (7.43m) and 110m Hurdles (13.89) pocketed 2nd (7760), while American Chris Helwick finished 3rd with 7609 points.

Chris Randolph of USA with 7358, Puerto Rican Steven Merrero 6647 rounded out the top five finishers.

On the women's side, Pearson improved on her first day 3rd place position to take the title, despite only topping the Javelin Throw (44.35m), with 5585 points.

She ran 13.99secs for 2nd in the 100m, cleared 1.66m for joint 5th in the High Jump, 8th with 11.27m in the Shot Put, 2nd 200m (25.00secs), 5th Long Jump (5.65m) and 8th 800m (2:21.48).

Jamaican Salcia Slack finished 2nd with 5534 points. She won the Long Jump (5.99m), 2nd Javelin Throw (44.05m), 3rd 800m (2:16.91), 8th 200m (26.03), 6th Shot Put (12.20m), joint 9th High Jump (1.60m), 9th 100m Hurdles (14.77).

Nigerian Naomi Osazuwa finished 3rd with 5506 points, Dominican Republic pair of Francia Marzanillo of 5474 and Juana Castillo 5356 rounded off the top five.

Day one leader Sharon Day, also of the US, was unable to continue after suffering tendonitis in her knee.
