German brothers Robert and Christoph Harting, the 2012 and 2016 Olympic discus champions respectively, will clash with last year’s world-leading thrower Daniel Stahl at the Bauhaus-galan, an IAAF Diamond League meeting, in Stockholm on 18 June.

Robert Harting dominated the discus for the first half of this decade, winning three consecutive world titles as well as the 2012 Olympic title and the 2012 and 2014 European titles.

But last year it was younger brother Christoph who took over and won Olympic gold, throwing a lifetime best of 68.37m in the final round.

Christoph Harting’s winning mark in Rio was a world-leading throw at the time, but it was bettered by Stahl two weeks later at the Swedish Championships when the 24-year-old threw a lifetime best of 68.72m, moving to second on the Swedish all-time list behind former world record-holder Ricky Bruch.

Last weekend Stahl threw beyond 68 metres at two separate competitions in California, backing it up with an additional four throws between 66 and 67 metres.

“It is the second-best distance I have thrown,” Stahl said after his recent competitions. “It feels reasonably good.”

His coach, Vésteinn Hafsteinsson, believes that there is potential for more. “Daniel is ready for 70 metres,” he said.

Stahl’s compatriot Axel Härstedt, who finished 10th in the Olympic final last year, will also compete at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Stockholm.
